Deeper Isn't Always Better. Smarter Is.

Most people think deep tissue massage just means more pressure. Press harder, get deeper, done. But that's not how the body works — and it's why so many people leave deep tissue sessions feeling bruised with the same problem they walked in with.

True deep tissue work is about accessing the deeper layers of muscle, fascia, and attachment points with specificity and purpose. It's not a blunt instrument. It's precise work applied at the right angle, the right depth, and in the right sequence to release the tissue that's actually causing your problem.

At Movement Improvement, we start by understanding what's driving your restriction before we ever apply pressure. That means your deep tissue session is built around what your body actually needs — not a standard sequence we run on everyone.

Signs Your Body Needs Real Deep Tissue Work

  • Chronic muscle tension that returns within days of a massage
  • A feeling of "knots" that never fully release
  • Restricted range of motion in your shoulders, neck, or hips
  • Pain that's been in the same spot for months or years
  • Post-workout soreness that takes too long to recover from
  • Tension headaches that start at the base of your skull
  • Tightness that stretching hasn't been able to solve

The Full Toolkit — No Add-On Fees

  • Deep tissue and neuromuscular therapy
  • Myofascial release and sustained pressure techniques
  • Therapeutic cupping to create decompression
  • Hot stones to warm and prepare resistant tissue
  • Percussion to increase circulation and tissue pliability
  • Ice and contrast therapy when inflammation is present
  • Stretching and joint mobility work as needed

Movement First. Deep Work Second.

Before we start any deep tissue work, we take a few minutes to understand how your body has been performing, where you're feeling limited, and what patterns keep showing up. This isn't a checkbox — it shapes the entire session.

If your upper traps are tight because your thoracic spine is stiff and not rotating properly, pressing on your traps won't fix the problem. We identify the source, work from there, and use whatever tools your tissue responds best to that day.

The full toolkit — cupping, heat, percussion, ice — is always included. If your tissue needs to be warmed before we go deep, we warm it. If decompression will get us further than compression, we cup first. There are no add-on fees. You get what your body needs.

What to Expect at Your First Deep Tissue Session

1

Check-In and Assessment

We start with a brief conversation about how your body has been performing — where you're feeling tight, what movements feel limited, and what patterns keep coming back. This takes about 5 minutes and completely changes the quality of everything that follows.

2

Layered, Targeted Work

We work from superficial to deep — warming the surface tissue first, then progressively accessing the deeper layers that need the most attention. We communicate with you throughout to stay calibrated to exactly the right depth and pressure for your body.

3

Supporting Modalities as Needed

If cupping will create more space than pressure, we'll switch. If a tight area needs heat before we can access the depth it needs, we apply it. If ice will help settle an inflamed attachment point, it's included. Always purposeful, never routine.

4

Results You Can Measure

By the time you get off the table, you should be able to move your arm further, turn your head more freely, or breathe more deeply than when you walked in. That's the benchmark. If we're not hitting it, we adjust.

Deep Tissue Massage — FAQ

Real deep tissue work should feel like productive discomfort — not sharp pain. We work at a depth that creates change, not one that makes you brace or hold your breath. Good communication throughout the session keeps us dialed in to exactly the right pressure for your tissue.
Most clinics run a standard sequence and call it deep tissue. We start with an assessment that shapes every decision in the session — where we work, how deep we go, what tools we use. If your problem is coming from your hips but showing up in your low back, we treat the hips. That's a different kind of session.
Most clients notice a meaningful shift in the first session. For chronic, long-standing tension patterns, 3–6 sessions with consistent frequency creates the most durable change. We'll give you an honest recommendation at your first appointment based on what we find.
No. Deep tissue work is included in every session at no additional cost. If your body needs it, we do it. Cupping, hot stones, ice, and percussion are also always included at the standard session rate.
It depends on your plan. We accept many employer health insurance plans, Oregon PIP for motor vehicle accident clients, and workers' compensation. Visit our insurance section to verify your benefits — it only takes a minute.
